Peter Trippi, one of the most influential voices in art today and editor-in-chief of Fine Art Connoisseur, has written a critical essay on Vincent Xeus’s most ambitious project to date, and his verdict leaves little room for hedging. Titled “Inquiry, Not Iconography,” the essay declares that Xeus “has broken exciting ground” with LIGHT \ POWER: The Kennedy Women, a cycle of twenty-eight works, and calls the results “undeniably consequential and unexpectedly moving.”

Trippi sets Xeus beside Gerhard Richter and Luc Tuymans, the reigning masters of painting from the photograph, and shows where he goes further. Where they absorb “the image, the blur, the faded wash,” Xeus “expels it. The painting becomes a space the image cannot follow into.” Trippi calls this “a necessary power move,” one in which “the photo does not control Xeus’s artwork.” Xeus works, in his own words, from “biography as source, never subject.” Trippi’s closing claim sets the stakes: his work “proposes a paradigm for artists who want to transcend the frame and the wall, to unite historical fact and artistic imagination in a way that is profound and unforgettable.”
